Ameresco, Inc. (NYSE: AMRC), a global leader in energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions, together with Enerqos Energy Solutions S.r.l., its Milan-based subsidiary, is leading a major architectural and energy upgrade at the Istituto Stomatologico Italiano (ISI), a renowned healthcare institution in central Milan.
Launched at the end of 2024 and scheduled for completion by late 2025, the project is a benchmark for the healthcare sector: an integrated approach that combines advanced energy efficiency and resilience solutions with architectural and structural upgrades, enhancing both the building’s performance and its historical identity.
The initiative covers the entire complex — three interconnected buildings of different construction periods and characteristics — while ensuring full continuity of daily healthcare services.
Key project highlights include:
- A new high-performance double-skin facade with a combination of metal and green solar screens, delivering both energy savings and a distinctive architectural identity;
- Comprehensive HVAC system upgrades, improving indoor air quality and optimizing energy efficiency;
- Installation of a photovoltaic system with battery storage, ensuring energy continuity even in the event of grid disruptions;
- Extensive seismic structural upgrades across the entire historic complex;
- Construction of a new external elevator, eliminating architectural barriers and enhancing accessibility — including access to a newly renovated rooftop area.
“We saw in this project an opportunity to renew the image of the Institute and to integrate innovative technologies within our facility,” said Dr. Alberto Clivio, President of ISI. “This energy and architectural upgrade reflects our desire to enhance a healthcare institution that has always been an integral part of Milan — both for its central location and its role — and to project it towards new standards of comfort and technological innovation.”
“Energy efficiency and architectural preservation must go hand in hand,” said Massimo Fiscaletti, CEO of Enerqos. “This project exemplifies how we can deliver high-performance, future-ready healthcare buildings while respecting and enhancing their historic value.”
The entire project is led by Enerqos’s dedicated ZEB – Zero Emission Building business unit, managing all phases — from energy and architectural design through project execution to the coordination of permitting processes and financial incentives. The team’s deep expertise in Italy’s complex regulatory and fiscal landscape represents a key strength of Ameresco’s Italian operations.
